We welcome all visitors to our Orthodox chapel, located in Berea, KY! St. Nina Orthodox Mission is itself a daughter of a now-large parish, St. Athanasius Orthodox Church in Nicholasville, that began as a small mission back in 2002. Both our mother parish and our daughter mission are blessed to have many visitors. We invite you to “come and see,” especially as we mark the holy days of Great Lent, Holy Week, and Pascha (March 3-April 20.) Our mother parish has created a complete Guide for Holy Week & Pascha (that includes info for St. Nina Mission) here.

Our full calendar for all events in our mission over the next several months is here.

  • Our services at St. Nina during the month of May include the following:
    • Saturday, May 10: 6pm Great Vespers & Confessions (Fr. Giorgi)
    • Sunday, May 11: 930am Divine Liturgy & Potluck (Fr. Giorgi)
    • Tuesday, May 13: 630pm Great Vespers w/ Christian Teaching (Fr. Justin)

Yesterday marked a significant milestone in the history of the Orthodox Church in America(OCA): the 55th anniversary of receiving the Tomos of Autocephaly from the Russian Orthodox Church on May 18, 1970. This historic event granted the OCA its status as a self-governing (autocephalous) Orthodox Church, recognizing its maturity and ability to govern its own affairs while remaining in full communion with world Orthodoxy.

Archdeacon Joseph Matusiak interviewed former OCA Metropolitan Theodosius (1977-2002) in 2019. The interview offers a unique firsthand perspective on this pivotal moment. At the time of autocephaly, Metropolitan Theodosius was a junior bishop tasked with receiving the Ronos from the Mother Church. You can listen to the interview here: https://on.soundcloud.com/GfTss7uvx4tGWmvLA

In his written account, Metropolitan Theodosius described the joy, challenges, and significance of the autocephaly. Read that account here: https://bit.ly/3F9rrFi

While the OCA’s autocephaly remains recognized primarily by the Moscow Patriarchate, the Georgian Church, the Orthodox Church in Poland and the Orthodox Church in the Czech Lands and Slovakia, it has played a crucial role in shaping Orthodoxy in America, fostering indigenous leadership, and promoting liturgical and pastoral life in the local context.

Memory Eternal to Metropolitan Theodosius, all of those who labored to secure our Tomos, and Many Years to His Beatitude Tikhon and the whole body of the OCA faithful on this historic anniversary!Image attachmentImage attachment+Image attachment

Our mission serves people in Southern and Eastern Kentucky that was hard-hit by tornadoes last night. Word is trickling in. We know that at least 14 Kentuckians have died. We have heard of no fatalities in our mission family. But one parishioner lost her workplace and another spouse of a regular visitor is engaged in search and rescue in Laurel County, where are least 8 people perished. Please pray for folks in Southern KY. If you are able to support relief, our mission partners with Christian Appalachian Project, which has people on the ground in most of these areas: https://www.christianapp.org/Image attachmentImage attachment+1Image attachment
